Life’s 4 Living has developed a new wellbeing programme for mothers of new babies with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. The programme combines education with massage, other relaxation techniques and the ability to build support network among groups of mothers in similar situations. It is designed to address the specific challenges and issues that commonly confront mothers who give birth to disabled babies and babies with life-threatening illnesses. Just as importantly, it aims to improve the wellbeing of babies through relaxation (primarily massage) and by being around increasingly calm and confident mothers able to deal more adequately with the challenges facing them.

In line with its broader approach, Life’s 4 Living proposes a programme for new mothers of disabled and seriously ill babies that addresses a clear deficiency in the mainstream health system. The programme takes into consideration the specific needs of mothers dealing with unique challenges, who may be at increased risk of post-natal depression. Additionally, it incorporates best practice in care for newborn babies, with a particular focus on the needs of disabled and seriously ill babies.

This new program takes a local approach for reasons relating to impact and practicality. Given that one of the projects aims is to build local support networks between mothers dealing with similar situations, a local approach is necessary to a) enable mothers to travel to classes with a minimum of effort and b) to increase the potential for support networks to operate outside of and beyond the actual programme, thereby increasing the sustainability and impact of the programme.

Life’s 4 Living is currently looking for mothers with babies who would like to participate – Mothers need to be based in London and their babies must be under 1.5 years old.
